WORKSHOP: The shadow and its double - about the contemporary shadow theatre

Saturday, August 18th, 09:00 - 12:00
Repsal 1, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern

In the last thirty years the shadows theatre has undergone a remarkable revolution in technique and in language and one important impetus to this came from Teatro Gioco Vita. Some characteristics of this change were the use of pinpoint lamps, the manipulation of the light, the special handling of the screen, the different kinds of shadow puppets, the projection behind and in front of the screens. For that the traditional limited space of the shadows, which we can look upon as a system of closed techniques and relationships, has been replaced by an open space, rich and dynamic in possibilities and powers of articulation. In our opinion this new space for the shadows is at the heart of the contemporary shadows theatre.

A Tarumba - Teatro de Marionetas is a Portuguese professional theatre company, based in Lisbon, established in 1993, with artistic direction of Luís Vieira and Rute Ribeiro. Its purpose is to spread and promote puppetry and visual theatre. Tarumba's artistic project covers artistic creation and experimentation, training and research - projects developed at CAMa - Centro de Artes da Marioneta where the company is based, and which is home to their theatrical, bibliographic and iconographic estate, and which functions as a puppetry documentation centre. It is within this context, that the company and Luis Vieira and Rute Ribeiro develops a number of initiatives that help promoting new links between the artistic creation and the audience, using as starting point the mixing of different languages, such as video, puppetry, theatre, visual arts, dance, in other words the language of contemporary puppetry.

SEMINAR: The World in Europe - contemporary puppetry, global exchanges and migration

Monday, August 20th, 10:00 - 16:00
Foajé 3, Kulturhuset-Stadsteatern

UNIMA Sweden and the Pop up Puppets festival welcome puppetry lovers, specialists and theatregoers to a public conference on the impact of migration in the arts.

The continent of Europe has a rich heritage of puppetry, from popular theatre to high art. Through the centuries a flow of visiting artists working with glove puppets, string marionettes and shadow theatre enriched the tradition. With modernism in the beginning of the 20thcentury a new interest in exploring puppetry peaked.

Contemporary puppetry permanently explores the boundaries of the art form in its forms, techniques and narratives. Europe of today is a continent of migration, within the EU member countries and from other parts of the world, in particular the Middle East, East Asia and Africa. The conference focuses on how contemporary puppetry mediates and explores cultural forms drawn from multiple migratory routes and practices and can be seen as an innovative and dynamic space for new European citizens, offering global perspectives for the 21stcentury.

Speakers and participants will include practitioners and scholars from around the world.

Chair: Margareta Sörenson, theatre critic and writer, Sweden.
The seminar is for free, but please registrate by sending a mail to: workshop@assitej.se Limited number of seats.

Pop up Puppets is organized by Kulturhuset Stadsteatern and Marionetteatern in co-operation with UNIMA Sweden, ASSITEJ Sweden and DOCK18.
